Community Hospital Alcohol Team (CHAT)

North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare Trust has an exciting new team within the Substance Misuse Service, the Community Hospital Alcohol Team (CHAT), which commenced service on 26 October 2020.

The team is working in close partnership with HALT Team from University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM), and alongside Stoke CDAS and other external agencies. This new service for Stoke-on-Trent is funded by the CCG.

Our aim is to support UHNM with:

  • Continuing alcohol detoxifications from UHNM
  • Supporting Hepatology outpatient clinics
  • Supporting frequent attenders that attend emergency portals at UHNM
  • Support for individuals that require surgery, and there is a need for reduction in alcohol intake.
  • Up to 12 weeks of psycho-social intervention

CHAT is managed by Tracey Stevenson and the wider team consists of a mixture of both experienced nurses and healthcare support workers.

Positive feedback from service users and UHNM Colleagues

"I think the team is very responsive to referrals. It’s brilliant how you respond so quickly."
"Coming to see patients on the ward is very beneficial."
"I think we have a very good working relationship with your lovely team."
"Rapid follow up for patients is really beneficial following discharge as they are more likely to continue with their goals."
"Patients are much more likely to engage with services if they are seen in hospital and meet the person/ team who will support them on discharge."
"Nothing is too much trouble."
"It’s really helpful for us that you communicate with CDAS for patients that are open to them."
"We have also had several successful continued detoxes and one over the Christmas period. Without the interventions of CHAT, the gentleman would have been sent home to continue to consume alcohol to prevent withdrawal symptoms and would very likely re-attended ED with alcohol-related issues while he waited for assessment for and elective detoxification."
