The Community Triage Team (CTT) (also known as the ‘Street Triage team’) is a collaboration between Staffordshire Police and North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust.
It is a small team of designated, experienced mental health nurses and a police officer based at Hanley Fire Station, working from 4pm to 2am, seven days a week.
The CTT aims to ensure that the police have sufficient understanding about someone’s needs. We aim to support individuals who come into contact with police outside of custody who are experiencing mental health difficulties or emotional distress.
The team provides timely crisis assessment, advice, support, signposting and completion of referrals to address the individual’s difficulties, as well as offering assessment in order to divert from Section 136 MHA detention.
The CTT provides a dedicated resource for use by Staffordshire police officers that enables a multi-agency approach across health, social and police services for individuals in emotional distress or mental crisis. It ensures timely assessment of an individual’s emotional distress/mental crisis when in contact with the police in a community setting and supports in creating a safe and appropriate pathway for people dealt with by the police where the Mental Health Act is not applicable.
The service is provided to people across North Staffordshire aged 16 years and over.
