Today is Stop Food Waste Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness of the environmental, social, and economic impacts of food waste.
Did you know? 33% of all food produced worldwide is wasted each year.
As part of our sustainability initiative, we have been working to reduce food waste across the Harplands Hospital site and are delighted with the results we have seen over the last year alone.
Colleagues at Harplands Hospital have seen a reduction in monthly food waste from over 2000kg a month in July 2024, to just over 700kg in March 2025 – that’s a reduction of over 1600kg in monthly food waste – equivalent to over 70%!
This has been a fantastic collaborative effort, led by our facilities team, who have worked in close partnership with our colleagues in Serco and our clinical teams to monitor the number of meals being ordered and advise on recommended portion sizes, whilst ensuring patient choice – enabling a successful reduction in food wastage, without impacting the quality service provided to patients.
Well done to everyone involved!
