The Neuropsychiatry Community Service delivers a spectrum of evidence-based diagnostic assessments, treatment, interventions and support to improve and maintain the mental wellbeing of people with neurological conditions who require support and treatment for psychiatric, psychological, cognitive and behavioural problems arising from their condition.
The Neuropsychiatry Community Service is a complex speciality which supports people who develop mental health problems following an acquired brain injury. A brain injury could be caused by an accident, for example, and could result in a severe change of personality – this is likely to be as a result of a neurological change. The acquired brain injury may be the result of trauma due to progressive, degenerative changes which can include genetic conditions such as Huntington’s Disease.
The multi-disciplinary team works flexibly across the inpatient and outpatient services ensuring continuity for the patient. The team works with patients in their own homes and at The Bennett Centre, as well as offering support and advice for local specialist providers in the area.
Clients accessing the Neuropsychiatry Community Service are supported by the team to reach their potential through extensive assessment of their needs and abilities.
