PICU (Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit)

About the service

PICU (Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit) is a six-bedded, mixed-sex ward within Harplands Hospital. It provides intensive, person-centred care to individuals aged 18 and above who present with complex mental illnesses and co-morbidities that compromise safety to themselves and/or others.

PICU houses a seclusion facility for those that require that level of safety for short periods of time and there are clear policies and protocols embedded to ensure that restrictive practices are kept to a minimum and constantly reviewed.

The multi-disciplinary team comprises of nurses, consultant psychiatrists, psychologists, occupational therapists and activity workers who work together to provide holistic care to their group of patients.

PICU engages with the national sexual safety collaborative to maintain safety within a mixed sex environment.
