About the service

The Place of Safety is for people in extreme mental distress who are detained for their own safety and the safety of others under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act by the police. Under Section 136, people can be detained for assessment for up to 72 hours. However, this is usually done within a fraction of this time, 3 hours is the Trust expected target, enabling the person to receive the right treatment and care as quickly as possible.

This one-bed facility is currently located off Ward 2, at the Harplands Hospital site, pending completion of our new Urgent Care Centre.

PLEASE NOTE: As part of the Trust’s commitment to make it as easy as possible for our service users, carers and visitors to access and use our Harplands Hospital services, we have introduced a new camera controlled car park management system on the hospital site. You will be required to register your vehicle’s details if you are visiting the Harplands site. Please click on this link for more information. A downloadable leaflet for further information is available here.
