Ward 1

About the service

Ward 1 is a 14-bedded mixed-sex acute ward for people whose psychiatric condition requires inpatient provision due to safety for themselves or others. It provides structured, supportive individualised care for acute episodes of mental illness.

The therapy on ward one is delivered by a multi-disciplinary team and is based on a holistic model, providing a thorough, ongoing assessment of each patient’s psychological, physical and social needs, offering individualised care based upon these assessments and not containment.

Collaboration between staff and patients is crucial to making a difference to patient care and experience during their stay in hospital. Ward 1 engages with the national sexual safety collaborative to support patients on a mixed-sex ward.

Through provision of a daily structure and a range of effective clinical interventions, the team expects to balance the therapeutic needs of the patient with the need for support and security, while minimising the individual’s dependence upon staff within the ward.

All patients are encouraged to take an active part in their programme of care, within the constraints of the Mental Health Act, while maintaining their own safety and that of those around them.
