About the service

The Children’s Community Learning Disability Team provides advice and support to children and young people up to the age of 19, who live in Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire with global developmental delay and moderate to severe learning disability and their families.

The team aims to assist and support children and young people and their families to understand and manage the difficulties they may be experiencing due to their disability, by providing highly specialist assessments, intervention, advice and support.

The team is able to help with difficulties such as; behaviours that challenge, low mood and anxiety, feeding/dietary problems, sleep difficulties, skill development, autistic spectrum disorders (ASD), fears and phobias and concerns about development.

The team consists of a Psychologist, Psychiatrist, Learning Disability Nurses and an Occupational Therapist. The team will provide assessments and interventions in a variety of settings appropriate to the child and family e.g. family home, school, nursery, short break provision, clinic. The team regularly runs groups for parents and carers providing information, advice and support regarding behaviour, communication and the importance of routine, amongst other topics.
