Learning Disability Week 2020

Learning Disability Week, presented by the charity Mencap, runs from 15 – 21 June and Combined will be supporting with a range of activities, as well as awareness content from our corporate social media channels.

The theme for 2020 is the importance of friendships during lockdown. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have all been living in lockdown. This means that many people with a learning disability are feeling isolated, as they have been unable to see their friends and families.

Combined will be promoting a series of videos each day made by our Learning Disability Services team, incorporating our Community Learning Disability Health and Intensive Support teams, as well as launching a sunflower competition designed to encourage increased activity and inclusion. Keeping Active and Well – Life in Lockdown – , Wellness Wednesday, and Treat Me Well will also be themes, as well as a Virtual Coffee Morning at 11:30am on Tuesday 16 June, a craft session at 11am on Wednesday 17 June, and much more.

“Learning Disability Week is a fantastic opportunity for our LD services to raise awareness about what a learning disability is and some of the health inequalities experienced,” said Jessica Fitzgerald, Service Manager – Learning Disabilities and Children’s Inpatients, North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust.

“We are using the week to let people know about the range of specialised learning disability services we have and the type of support we offer to adults and children with learning disabilities in Stoke-on-Trent.

“This year’s theme is friendship; in acknowledgement that people with learning disabilities can be very isolated and this is a particular problem during these uncertain times. All of the teams have done a fantastic job of putting together creative and innovative ways to enable engagement over the week and I hope that you will all be able to join us in our celebrations.”
